A high school student in Florida’s panhandle not only failed his assignment for science class – he got a response from the teacher that may have that instructor facing consequences.

The teacher at Rutherford High School, located near Panama City, wrote “WTF is this?” on the homework assignment before giving it back to the student. That teenager gave it to his mother, who was upset at what she saw.

“It wasn't anything about not getting the credit, it was more so the language about what the writing to students,” Melinda Smith told NBC affiliate WJHG-TV. “That was very inappropriate and not acceptable for a teacher whatsoever.”

The school’s principal told the station that the teacher was apologetic and said it was a “mistake on her part”, adding that the school district was notified and are currently investigating the situation.

"All of the teachers at Rutherford High School are caring, loving teachers and we're also human and so, we make mistakes, but we understand that we are called to a high professional standard and when we make mistakes we try to correct those mistakes and move forward,” principal Coy Pilson said.

The teacher involved did not speak to the station and Pilson did not say if she had been punished for her action.
