A former FIU professor has died after being hit by an MBTA Commuter Rail train in Beverly, Massachusetts, while riding his bicycle Tuesday morning.
NBC Affiliate WBTS-TV reports authorities said the victim was riding a bicycle when he was struck by an outbound train at Beverly Depot Station while riding on a pedestrian "cut-through" lane around 8:20 a.m.
The man was taken to an area hospital for emergency care where he later died.
Emerson College identified the victim as associate professor Moses Shumow, who graduated from the school in 2001 and joined its journalism program this fall.
Shumow was an assistant professor in the department of Journalism and Media with Florida International University. His work with the school was mainly centered around the production and consumption of Hispanic media.
Prior to teaching with FIU Shumow created documentary film for channels like Discovery, PBS, and National Geographic.
In a statement, FIU Dean Brian Schriner said:

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic passing of our friend and colleague Dr. Moses Shumow. Moses was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was kind and caring, and he made a tremendous difference in the lives of his students, colleagues, and community. Our deepest sympathies to his wife and family."
The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation by Transit Police.
