Former University of Miami running back Tyrone Moss, who set the rushing yards record in Broward County before heading south to play for the Hurricanes, died Thursday at the age of 33.

A former coach of Moss at Blanche Ely High School in Pompano Beach, Steve Davis, confirmed to NBC 6’s Chris Fischer that the former player died. Davis said it was from an apparent heart attack, though that has not been confirmed by officials.

Moss led the Tigers to a state championship as a senior in 2002, finishing his career with over 7,100 rushing yards and being named one of the 100 best high school players in Florida history during a 2007 celebration of high school football in the state.

One of the top rated recruits in the country, Moss chose to stay close to home and signed with the ‘Canes and spent four seasons playing for Miami. He finished his college career with just over 1,900 yards and 26 touchdowns on the ground.

His best season came in 2005 when the then junior had 701 yards and 12 touchdowns, being named to the all-ACC’s first team despite missing several games with a knee injury.
