Former Soldier in Florida Gets Kidney Donation From Daughter

A retired Air Force master sergeant facing end-stage renal disease has been given a kidney from his 19-year-old daughter.

Florida Today reported Friday that 56-year-old Derrell White and his daughter, Elissa Gilbert, were recuperating at their Palm Bay, Florida home after successful surgeries earlier this month.

White was healthy and fit until 2014, when his kidney function dropped to 20 percent and he found he had no energy. He had been diagnosed with Berger's disease decades before but he had been able to control the ailment through medications.

The disease can inflame the kidney and hinder its filtering abilities.

His name had been added to a national kidney transplant list before his daughter volunteered hers.
