A police officer in Fort Myers has resigned after admitting to sending and receiving over 800 text messages with a minor – many discussing sex, drugs and drinking.

25-year-old Matthew Vagi was being investigated after a complaint from the teenage girl’s mother. According to NBC affiliate WBBH-TV, the messages began after Vagi spent time working security at the high school the teen attends.

Vagi, according to an investigation, gave the female rides home in his police car with the audio and video equipment turned off, a violation of department policy. The two began messaging each other, with Vagi asking the teen about her sexual relationship with her current boyfriend.

Fort Myers interim police Chief Dennis Eads said the department found no evidence of Vagi having sex with the teen, but still turned over findings to state officials. Eads said that he had planned to fire the officer before he submitted his resignation.
