FPL Christens Natural Gas-Fueled Plant

Florida Power & Light commissioned a natural gas-fueled power plant at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale.

The Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center began operations April 1, two months ahead of schedule.

The Sun Sentinel reports the plant was previously announced as costing $1.2 billion, but FPL officials say the final cost will be less.

Company president and CEO Eric Silagy says the plant demonstrates FPL's commitment to reducing foreign oil use while producing clean, reliable and affordable energy. He compares the plant to taking a car from the 1960s and replacing it with a much more efficient hybrid.

Officials say the plant requires 30 percent less fuel than its predecessor. The utility says it will save customers about $400 million over its 30-year lifespan.
