A Deerfield Beach resident just took being a neighbor to a whole new level after saving the life of the elderly man next door during a house fire.

Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene near SW 3rd Court, where Alan Potrzuski told them he heard commotion at his neighbor’s house.

The 64-year-old saw black smoke coming out of the neighboring home and took out the mask he uses as a pest control technician and began to extinguish the dishwasher fire.

Upon arrival, BSO Fire Rescue found a mostly extinguished fire.

“Mr. Potrzuski‘s swift actions likely contributed to the homeowners safe escape and minimized damages to the home from the fire," they said in a statement. "This situation clearly emphasizes the importance for homeowners to not only have working smoke alarms in their home, but fire extinguishers as well."
