Frigid South Florida Seeing Record Lows

Freeze warnings issued in Broward and Miami-Dade as temps keep dipping

It’s cold, really cold at least for South Florida standards, and we've got record low temperatures to prove it.

Freeze Warnings were issued in western parts of Broward and Miami-Dade Tuesday and Wednesday when thermometer reading were about 20 degrees below average.

The holiday cool down was not Santa-inspired, though it did seem somewhat arctic. High pressure planted over the central portion of the country funneled chilly Canadian air all the way into the deep south.

An average low temperature in Miami is 63 degrees at this time of the year which is usually achieved just before sunrise. But early risers faced temps in the 30s and 40s Monday and Tuesday. Inland locations checked in with the lowest readings.

Miami Beach fell to 43 degrees Wednesday, eliminating the old daily record low of 49 degrees from 2003.

Those in Ft. Lauderdale faced new record lows of 40 and 39 Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

High temperatures also fell short, struggling to even hit 60 on Tuesday. Ft. Lauderdale maxed out at only 58 degrees on Tuesday; the average high is 78. This was the coolest high temperature ever recorded on December 7th.

There will be a break in the cold Thursday, with morning lows near 50 degrees along the coast and highs in the mid 60s. As the polar jet stream retreats northward late week, South Florida highs will take warm turn into the upper 70s.
