Fund Started for Funeral of Margate Girls Found in Canal

A Margate father said he doesn’t “know what happened” that led his two children, aged two and four, to end up dead in a canal behind their home.

The father, Louigens Louima, said he and his daughters were inside the house and then he went to his room to get dressed. Louima said he never saw the two girls again.

“Probably five minutes, me go in the room, after I come back, I don’t know what happened,” Louigens said. “Me check everywhere, I no see them.”

The gate in Louima’s backyard is wired shut, so the family speculated the girls must have wandered out and through the neighbor’s yard to the canal. The kids were reported missing just before 5 p.m. Tuesday. Two-year-old Louidjiena was found unresponsive in the canal and her sister was found in a similar state a few minutes later.

Both girls were pronounced dead at Northwest Medical Center.

“It’s very sad,” said neighbor Mark Young. “I don’t have kids, but if I ever have ‘em, it makes me aware how much of a responsibility they are.”

The family has set up a fund to help them pay for the two funerals for their children. Wells Fargo is handling the fund called the “Louidline and Louidjina Louima Memorial Fund,” and you can donate at any branch of the bank or call 954-974-1000.
