A Broward County man at the center of several investigations into funeral services fraud is in jail again, and law enforcement in Miami-Dade County is asking to keep him there, at least for now.
Raymond Shawn Mackey is on probation for organized fraud, for stealing $35,000 from funeral insurance companies. He submitted paperwork to two firms falsely claiming their clients had died and then arranged to cash the checks for funeral services that were never provided, according to court records.
He was arrested last weekend in Broward County on charges of driving with a suspended license.
But, despite having an acquaintance post $100 cash bond, he is not being released because Miami-Dade County has put a hold on him, as it determines whether to charge him with violating his probation.
The new arrest could be used to violate one provision of the 10 years of probation he received after pleading guilty to the organized fraud.
But the judge who sentenced him in 2017 also ordered he have "no employment with any funeral services or industry."
But the NBC 6 Investigators revealed last year that he was once again involved in funeral services, collecting thousands of dollars from people for services and burials that were not provided or paid for as Mackey or the funeral company he was working with promised.
One of those victims, Phyllis Schneider, was able to recover $16,000 from a state fund for victims of funeral fraud. Another widow, Jahoska Rodriguez, has yet to collect on a $4,200 judgment she obtained against the company she said Mackey worked for.

Prosecutors in Miami-Dade declined to comment on the case.
Jail and court records do not yet reveal whether Mackey has obtained a lawyer for his current troubles.
But he previously claimed he was never paid for any work he did in the funeral business after his organized fraud conviction.
