Funeral Services for Firefighter to Be Held Next Week

Kevin Johns, a 29-year veteran of the service, died Tuesday after being struck by changing a tire on the highway.

The 911 call made by a driver who struck and killed a Fort Lauderdale firefighter was released Thursday as funeral services were scheduled for next week.

Kevin Johns, a veteran Fort Lauderdale Fire Lieutenant, was working on a flat tire around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday on Interstate 95 in Palm Beach County. Officials said two cars were involved in an accident near the Yamato Road exit, when one of the cars involved in the crash veered off the highway and struck Johns.

"I need an ambulance! I need police! I had a bad accident, my car got off the road and I hit a man, please!" the frantic caller tells the operator in the call.

Johns was taken to Delray Medical Center, but died a little after 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The visitation will take place on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at The Sanctuary Church in Fort Lauderdale. Funeral services will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. at The Sanctuary Church.

The driver hasn't been charged but the incident remains under investigation.
