Gator Slows Morning Commute in Southwest Miami-Dade

Injured alligator found in middle of Bird Road

The morning commute was a bit more treacherous for motorists in Southwest Miami-Dade Wednesday when an injured gator wandered onto a roadway.

The alligator forced police to close a lane of traffic on the eastbound side of Bird Road near Southwest 144th Avenue.

Officers were seen waving traffic through the area, which is a school zone.

By 8:30 a.m., the gator was cleared off the road by wildlife officials and turned over to a trapper.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said the gator suffered an injury to its rear leg and may have to be euthanized.

Pino said the gator may have been run over by a car but couldn't confirm.
