Girl Shot by US Coast Guard Member Father Dies From Injuries

The man, John Presnar, also killed his wife and son before killing himself

An 8-year-old girl has died from her injuries more than a week after she was shot by her father, a U.S. Coast Guard serviceman, Miami-Dade police confirmed Tuesday.

The girl was hospitalized at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Her mother and 7-year-old brother were killed in the early hours of Dec. 16 in southwest Miami-Dade.

Further information was not immediately available.

Investigators say 44-year-old John Presnar started shooting during a domestic dispute with his wife at their home in the 1140 block of SW 242 Lane in Miami.

When the gunfire began, the wife told her mother to run out of the house and call for help. Officers arrived to find Presnar’s wife and his son dead from gunshot wounds and Presnar dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Presnar worked at the Coast Guard base in Miami Beach. The agency said Presnar had served with the agency since March 2001.
