Good Samaritan Killed Trying to Save Victims of Hit-and-Run

A Florida man lost his life trying to help victims of a hit-and-run crash Tuesday on Interstate 95, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

NBC affiliate WESH-TV said the incident occurred near Ormond Beach around 1:30 am. when Efrain Merced from Port St. Lucie was struck by another vehicle and killed.

Merced, 59, was driving a tractor-trailer in the southbound lane when he spotted the initial crash that happened when a car flipped over to the northbound lanes. To help the victims out of the hit-and-run, Merced stepped out of his vehicle and was struck.

The drivers of the initial crash were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
