Gun Rights Advocate Shot by Toddler Son Remains Hospitalized

Authorities say a Florida gun rights supporter accidentally shot by her 4-year-old son remains hospitalized.

Capt. Joseph Wells of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office says Jamie Gilt is too heavily medicated to speak with investigators.

Wells tells The Gainesville Sun Gilt is improving and deputies check on her progress daily.

Gilt was shot March 8 while driving with her son. According to the sheriff's office, the boy was in the backseat and got ahold of a loaded gun that was in the vehicle. The shot went through Gilt's seat and struck her in the back. The boy wasn't injured.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating. Authorities have said Gilt could face charges.

Social media posts linked to the 31-year-old Jacksonville woman advocated for gun ownership.
