Hate Speech Incidents Targeting South Florida Muslims

The South Florida Muslim community is on alert after two threats in two days. The latest was delivered in an email.

From anti-Muslim hate words spray painted on an Islamic school to a threatening email sent to a mosque, Muslims in South Florida have been the target of hate speech.

Published reports say the imam at the Islamic Center of Greater Miami in Miami Gardens got an email last weekend saying in part: "I want to kill every Muslim around the world."

"The imam, who is the leader of the mosque, we take those things seriously. We have a lot of concern because he is our leader," said Hasan Shabazz.

The Nur-Ul-Islam Academy in Cooper City was desecrated, which was discovered early Monday morning.

"I think people are scared. I've lived here 10 years and I've never had an issue. It's obviously all the recent events going on everywhere, it has nothing to do with what we represent or what we teach in there," one man said, who attends services there every day.

The FBI and the Broward Sheriff's Office are now investigating. The investigation not only includes the incident in Cooper City, but also neighbors about three miles away received anti-Semitic notes in their mailboxes.

If you know anything about these crimes, you're urged to contact police immediately.
