Health Officials Urge Swimmers to Stay Out of Sunny Isles Beach Waters

Officials have not said when it will be safe to return to the waters

Health officials issued an advisory urging Floridians to stay away from Sunny Isles Beach as water samples have tested positive for high amounts of enterococci, a form of bacteria that can pose a threat to swimmers.

The Florida Department of Health collected two consecutive water samples that exceeded the federal and state recommended standard for enterococci, according to a news release.

Swimmers are not recommended to swim in Sunny Isles Beach at this time. Health officials said it can pose an increased risk of illness, particularly for susceptible individuals.

Since 2002, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County performs weekly beach water quality tests at 17 sampling sites.

Officials have not said when it will be safe to return to the waters.
