The Miami Heat will try to sign free agent center Marcus Camby, who was waived by the Toronto Raptors last week and cleared waivers on Sunday.
The veteran center appeared in 24 games for the New York Knicks last season, averaging just over a point per game with 3.3 rebounds. New York traded him to Toronto last month.
"Marcus is weighing his options and would like to make a decision in the next few days," Camby's agent, Richard Kaplan, told the Miami Herald on Sunday.
With Juwan Howard likely not returning to the Heat next season, Camby could take his place as an end-of-the-bench player. Chris "Birdman" Andersen became Miami's first option off the bench among big men, followed (usually, if at all) by Joel Anthony.
The 2013-14 season would be Camby's 18th in the NBA. He is a two-time NBA All-Defensive first teamer and has led the league in blocks three times during his career. His days of being a starter are long gone, but that is not what the Heat would need from him.
Miami also remains interested in free agent Greg Oden, but they might not be able to afford him for the veteran's minimum (worth $1.4 million a year). New Orleans, Dallas, and San Antonio are all reported to covet Oden as well.
Miami can use a $3.2 million mid-level exception on Oden, but team president Pat Riley has said he is reluctant to use it on any free agents still available.
