Man Climbed Hialeah Cellphone Tower to Bring Attention to Father's Death

A man who scaled a cellphone tower in Hialeah and stayed up there for hours last month said he did it to bring attention to his father’s death.

Pablo Torres, 58, appeared in court Monday, more than a month after he climbed a 200-foot tower near 45th Place and Palm Avenue. He used a rope to move higher up the tower and stretched out on a platform as family members looked on.

Torres said he did it because his father died from the effects of exposure to asbestos in building materials and said he has a lawsuit currently going through the court system.

“Knowing that they were killing people by asbestos and we’re in court and we’re trying to win the case,” Torres said.

Torres spent six hours on the tower as Hialeah police negotiators tried to convince him to come down.

The judge Monday released Torres on recognizance and without bond. He is expected to appear in court next Tuesday for his arraignment on other charges of burglary and resisting arrest.
