Homeless Man Accused of Taking Daytona Beach Advocate's Van

Authorities say a homeless man carjacked a vehicle belonging to an advocate who was passing out water to needy people in a Daytona Beach neighborhood.

Daytona Beach police say 60-year-old Michael Pastore reported the incident on Sunday afternoon.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports 31-year-old Michael Speaks got into the van and started driving away. Pastore was able to jump into the vehicle and wrestle control from Speaks.

Police say Speakes then punched Pastore in the head multiple times. A passenger in the van managed to help Pastore regain control as Speakes jumped out and ran. He was arrested a short distance away.

Speaks remains in the Volusia County Jail on a $25,000 bond. Jail records don't indicate whether he's hired an attorney.
