Police, US Marshal Capture Attempted Homicide Fugitive From Virginia on the Run in Miami Beach

What to Know

  • Around 1 a.m., officers found the subject and took him into custody.

An attempted homicide fugitive wanted in Virginia was taken into custody early Monday morning after a standoff in Miami Beach, authorities said.

Officials were at the scene for hours near Alton Road and Dade Boulevard, setting up a perimeter for several blocks and keeping residents and tourists away.

Around 1 a.m., officers found the subject - identified as 26-year-old Derrick Robinson - and took him into custody shortly after officers attempted to capture him during a traffic stop where he later crashed his car and fled.

Officials say Robinson was wanted from a case in Virginia and information said he was in South Florida, potentially selling drugs to afford his run.

Police say they found a gun and drugs in the car, but would not confirm if it was the same weapon involved in the Virginia case. He has been charged with multiple counts of possession of controlled substances as well as other charges, including burglary and fleeing police.

Police from several agencies in Miami-Dade County, as well as a member of the US Marshals, took part in the capture.
