A 2-year-old girl was killed and her 5-year-old sister remained hospitalized with critical injuries after a collision on Interstate 95 in Deerfield Beach on Sunday, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.

FHP said the two-car collision occurred at about 10:45 a.m. on the I-95 southbound lanes just north of Sample Road.

"The crash resulted in the death of a 2-year old and a 5-year old in life support. Both children were not wearing any restraint devices," FHP said in a statement. "The crash is currently under investigation."

FHP officials later identified the child who died as Akeena Bennett while her sister Keanna remains in the hospital.

On Facebook, their mother, Annette Bennett, said Akeena died at the hospital while Keanna was put on life support as doctors gave her 24 hours to live.

"It's both of my kids, both of my kids are gone, my two babies are gone," she said.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla they were riding in, 34-year-old Raby Rashida, also suffered serious injuries, according to an FHP report. Rashida's relationship with the girls was unknown.

All southbound lanes were shut down for hours but reopened at about 5 p.m.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office Department of Fire Rescue said firefighters arrived on scene to find two vehicles extensively damaged – one of which appeared to have struck a barrier wall.

Police said the other vehicle involved, a Kia Forte, was occupied by a 26-year-old male driver who is listed in serious condition at Broward Health North.
