‘I'm Happy I'm Alive': Woman Hurt in Little Haiti Shooting

A woman who survived a triple shooting in Little Haiti over the weekend is counting her blessings.

"I'm glad, I'm happy. I'm happy I'm alive," Elba Panameno said Monday from her hospital bed.

The mother of five, her brother and her brother in law all survived the Sunday morning shooting, but she's still in pain.

"I had a physical therapist today, but that didn't go well. I started bleeding and gushing again. Hopefully tomorrow I'll go home with my kids," she said.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. Sunday in front of her home on Northwest 59th Street apartment. The family was having a glass of wine when an argument broke out between her sister and brother in law. She went out to break it up and moments later gunshots rang out.

"I pushed my husband inside the house so basically I took the bullet so he wouldn't get it, and I got shot in the leg. My brother, I thought he was dead. I only saw him on the floor," she said. "I felt weak, couldn't breathe. I was trying to keep strong. All I could think was my kid and my husband. I thought I was going to die, I thought I was going to die."

The shooting wasn't the only one in the area over the weekend. On Saturday night, just 11 blocks away, 15-year-old Jerry Wenelus was shot four times in a drive-by.

Police are investigating both shootings.
