A hit-and-run driver struck a pregnant woman and her two children in Miramar in 2016. Though the woman and children recovered, the unborn child would never see the light of day.
The woman convicted in the hit-and-run – Jessica Yevette Crane – was sentenced on Friday to 30 years in prison and five years of probation over charges including leaving the scene of a crash involving death and numerous DUI charges.
The Miramar Police Department said Crane fled the scene and was followed by multiple witnesses after the crash on Miramar Parkway just west of University Drive.
Michelle James was five months pregnant at the time and waiting at a bus stop with her children, a 3-year-old and 6-year-old.
Crane's attorneys argued she had mental issues, including bipolar disorder. Prosecutors said she had driven drunk before.
James appeared in court, still walking with a cane more than two years later.
Crane and her mother apologized to James on Friday.

“I’m so sorry for what happened to you and those children," Crane's mother said.
“I’m not a monster. I am not that person. I black out. I don’t even know who that person was," Crane said.
