Investigators: Company Not Responsible for Lightning Death

Federal investigators say a Fort Myers roofing company was not responsible for the death of an employee struck by lightning in May.

Rigoberto Diaz-Segura, 36, died May 16 at a hospital, three days after being hit by a bolt of lightning while working alongside three brothers at a Bonita Springs home.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Diaz-Segura was struck by lightning as he walked to a ladder after a storm had passed.

The owner of D. Peck Roofing tells the Naples Daily News that his employees did as they were trained and waited out the storm indoors before going back outside.

OSHA recommended the company offer employees lightning safety training and personal lightning detectors that make loud warning sounds when lightning is within striking distance.
