“It Hurt Bad,” 10-Year-Old Shooting Victim Tells His Story

A child who was shot while riding his bike is on the mend and talking about his frightening experience.

Jamari Tillman is a strong kid and opened up about what happened to him, from his hospital bed at Jackson Memorial Hospital -- where he still has a bullet lodged in his leg.

Tillman was reading cards and get well wishes from classmates on Friday. Hearing from his third grade classmates put a smile on his face.

The 10-year-old is in good spirits but still in the hospital recovering from a gunshot wound.

He was caught in crossfire Wednesday night outside the Liberty Square Community Center near Northwest 63rd Street and 14th Avenue.

"It's like burn, it hurt bad," Tillman said. "It's a bullet still in here, it used to be here, now it's right there."

Doctors say the bullet will stay there. It will cause more damage trying to get it out than to leave it in.

Police say Tillman was hit when three men walked up to the basketball courts where he was riding his bike, and opened fire. Tillman ran, but still got hit in the lower leg.

"It was loud, sounded like something was chasing me, bam bam bam," he said

He's expected to be just fine, but he says he's traumatized.

"I won't go outside no more or ride my bike, or nothing outside, I'm just gonna stay in the house... I'm scared I might get shot again on my other leg or feet," Tillman said.

"I just thank God it wasn't worse. Glad my baby will be back home," Tillman's mother, Tiffany Fair said.

But he won't be going home. While he regains his strength to walk again, he will live with grandmother who has a one-story house. She is hoping the move will ease his fear.

"He will come and be with me to nurse him back to health. He feels safer with me, he's scared to be at his mom's with the playground over there," said Sandra Fair.

And until he is released, Tillman will find comfort in the support from reading all the well wishes from his friends.

Police still have not made any arrests in this case. If you have information call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
