The customs facility at Key West International Airport is being expanded to process dozens more passengers per hour.
The Key West Citizen reports that the expansion will bring in more airlines serving the Caribbean, including destinations in Cuba.
Monroe County Airports Director Don DeGraw says the current facility that handles 10 international passengers an hour will grow to handle as many as 70 passengers an hour.
Currently, only Havana Air serves that international market with three flights a week out of Key West to Cuba with a nine-passenger turbo-prop plane.
DeGraw says that "with every happening with Cuba, it puts more pressure to finish the project.'' He hopes the expansion will be complete in the next five years.
