Nearly 500 swimmers from around the world participated in the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse challenge off the Florida Keys on Saturday.

Participants swam a total of eight miles from Islamorada to Alligator Reef Lighthouse and back.

The event was created to raise awareness for the nearly 150-year-old Lighthouse, as well as the five other aging lighthouses that sit off Florida's Keys.

St. Pete Beache's own Michael Schultz won the competition with a time of one hour, 25 minutes and 48 seconds.
