Latin American Business Association Hosts Turkey Giveaway in Hialeah Gardens

Thanksgiving cheer is spreading quickly in South Florida.

The Latin American Business Association gave away bags of food, including Thanksgiving turkeys, to families in need at a senior center in Hialeah Gardens Sunday.

"It brings us down to earth and keeps us in check when we stand here and do something for others," State Rep. Manny Diaz, Jr. said.

Residents received a free turkey and a bag of goodies as they walked into the senior center where the event was hosted.

"We've targeted both our seniors and also low income families throughout the city, and to this date this is our largest event that we've had," said Hialeah Gardens Councilman Lucky Garcia.

About 500 families took advantage of the giveaway. Those who received the bags said they are grateful they can share a meal this Thanksgiving with their loved ones.

"I feel awesome, happy because God sent us that," Stephanie Bello said after picking up a goodie bag.

The bags weren't full of just any food. The event's hosts gave the bags a little Latin flare by including products like Goya black beans and seasoning.

"Even though as Latin Americans we assimilate into the American culture, we bring a little bit of our Latin flare and heritage to Thanksgiving, and we do that with all the holidays," Diaz, Jr. said.

In the end, said LABA president William Delgado said it's all in the spirit of the holiday.

"I got here when i was 17 yrs of age and this country has been great to me. I think it's time to give back," he said.
