Locals and tourists woke up to temperatures in the 40s in South Florida Friday, some of the coolest weather to hit the region in nearly a year.

A freeze warning for inland Broward, Palm Beach and Collier counties was in effect until 8 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service said. Meanwhile, a frost advisory was issued for inland Miami-Dade and mainland Monroe counties that would be in effect Friday until 8 a.m.

Some people were brave enough to head out in shorts late Thursday and early Friday, while others bundled up in their Florida winter gear.

For one woman in Fort Lauderdale, it was a chance to show off her winter outfits.

"It’s wonderful without the humidity," she said. "In this weather, boots are great really cute, sweaters, hats, of course jackets with leather trim and wool."

"It’s cold here, a little disappointing, but it’s still a little better than Philadelphia," one tourist said.

"If you look at the rest of the country, it’s much colder, I was just in San Francisco," another man said.

The National Weather Service warned of possible agricultural damage, and said sensitive outdoor plants could be killed if left uncovered.

People are also warned to protect their pets during this cold snap.
