Man Accused of Crashing Vehicle Into Police Cruisers in Margate

A man is facing charges after allegedly ramming his vehicle into police cruisers in Margate.

On Monday, detectives in Broward County attempted to take Robert Thornton into custody for felony warrants, which included the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

It happened at 5561 Southwest 11th Street.

While attempting to conduct a traffic stop, detectives said Thornton intentionally accelerated towards a police cruiser being occupied by two officers. They said he struck a parked car and their police unit head-on.

After the collision, Thornton took off in an alleged attempt to evade arrest. Detectives said he accelerated his vehicle towards another police vehicle, occupied by two officers, and struck it head-on.

Detectives said Thornton then exited his vehicle and began running. They pursued him on foot, and Thornton was seen tossing a baggy with five morphine tablets.

Thornton was eventually taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers. He faces numerous charges including aggravated battery on an officer and resisting an officer with violence.

There's no word on whether he has an attorney.
