Man Accused of Shooting at MDPD Officers Surrenders

A man accused of shooting at two Miami-Dade Police officers in early June is now in police custody after turning himself in.

Jonathan Gilbert, 19, was arrested after surrendering to authorities on Monday in connection with the incident on June 9th.

That night, two officers who were a part of a robbery intervention detail in the area of Northwest 71st Street and Northwest 16th Avenue. Police say the neighborhood, known as "Sugar Hill" is a known high drug area.

The officers drove past Gilbert who was standing as a look out. When officers attempted to make contact, police say Gilbert pulled out a gun and opened fire. He continued to shoot as the officers drove to safety, police said. The officers were not injured.

Witnesses in the area reported seeing three men leave the scene in an older model Chevy Impala with red doors.

Police later identified Gilbert as the shooter, prompting an extensive search both for him and for the Chevy Impala. Gilbert was described by police as armed and dangerous.

Gilbert is facing charges of attempted murder of a police officer. He appeared in court on Tuesday where he was ordered held on no bond.

It was not immediately known whether Gilbert has an attorney.
