Man Arrested for 2007 Sexual Assault Based on DNA Evidence: Davie Police

Joseph Hammock faces charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and burglary, police said

Davie Police said they arrested a man this week for a rape he committed in 2007 after they resubmitted for evaluation DNA evidence from the scene.

Joseph Hammock, 47, was taken into custody on SW 9th Street in Davie on Wednesday, police said.

He faces charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment and burglary after he broke into a Davie woman’s home and raped her on Feb. 7, 2007, according to police.

The victim told police that her assailant came into her bedroom, ripped off her pants, and said that if she did not lay down he would kill her, police said in a 2007 report. He had to move a window fan to enter her home through the kitchen window, the victim told police.

After the woman dressed, her assailant wanted her to bring him to a nearby Publix and take out $200, but she managed to run away to her neighbor’s house as he went around to the passenger side of her vehicle, according to the police report.

The suspect fled on foot, the report said.

“While reviewing cold cases, detectives from Davie Police resubmitted DNA evidence that was recovered from the scene and were able to obtain a match. This allowed detectives to establish probable cause for the suspect and (obtain) an arrest warrant based on this new evidence,” Davie Police said in a statement Thursday.

Hammock stood in bond court Thursday, his head held down, as Broward Circuit Judge John Hurley read the charges against him.

Hammock was being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail Thursday night, according to online Broward Sheriff’s Office records. It was not immediately known whether he has an attorney.
