The former route logistics manager of a South Florida Brinks facility is accused of stealing $3.2 million on New Year's Day, then handing in his resignation and heading to California, the FBI says.
The FBI arrested 37-year-old Jose Argurto on Saturday in San Diego, California. Agents located the money both during and after his arrest. Argurto was booked into the Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego and is set to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge on Monday.
Surveillance video taken at around 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 1 appears to show Argurto removing two bags of cash from the vault at the facility, located at 5575 Northwest 87th Avenue in Miami, and putting them into a Volkswagen, 4-door sedan.
A short time later, the video appears to show Argurto leaving the Brinks facility in that white Volkswagen. Later, he returns and enters the building to complete his shift.
Before leaving his shift, authorities said Argurto left a letter of resignation and returned his service weapon.
Argurto is facing federal charges of theft of money belonging to a bank in connection with the incident. It is not known if he has hired an attorney.
The FBI's South Florida Task Force, Doral Police and Miami-Dade Police are investigating this ongoing matter.
