Man Arrested for Kicking, Killing Prairie Dog

Davie man faces animal cruelty charge in alleged attack

A Davie man in behind bars after police say he kicked and killed his family prairie dog.

Jonathan Pedro Godales, 26, was arrested late Monday night on animal cruelty charges after police say he punted the poor animal during a heated argument with his girlfriend.

According to police, the argument began over the presence of the couple’s two prairie dogs in their home in the 4200 block of Southwest 63rd Avenue and the effect it would have on Godales' girlfriend's pregnancy.

Wanting the prairie dogs out immediately, Godales allegedly became enraged and picked up and hurled the prairie dogs’ cage at the wall, with both inside, breaking it apart.

After more arguing, Godales allegedly kicked one of the prairie dogs into a coffee table, police said. It took the twitching animal about two minutes to die, Godales' girlfriend told police.

"It got what it deserves," Godales allegedly said before walking out of the home before police arrived.

The girlfriend told police that Godales had a history of animal abuse, having sprayed Lysol in the prairie dogs’ faces as punishment in the past.

Godales was in court Tuesday, where he was ordered held on $7,500 bond.
