Man Arrested on DUI Charges in Hallandale Beach Crash That Killed Pedestrian

Laszlo Aspirany, 69, was arrested Wednesday on charges including DUI manslaughter, DUI causing personal injury and DUI causing property damage

A man who allegedly sprayed cologne on himself and started to walk away from a four-car crash that killed a pedestrian in Hallandale Beach back in May has been arrested on DUI charges, authorities said.

Laszlo Aspirany, 69, was arrested Wednesday on charges including DUI manslaughter, DUI causing personal injury and DUI causing property damage in the May 10 crash that killed Susana Jenny Alvarez De Lima, according to an arrest report.

The report said Aspirany was leaving the parking lot of the Royal Palm Trailer Park at 720 S. Federal Highway when he failed to come to a complete stop and pulled onto Federal Highway.

Aspirany struck four cars, slammed into a concrete median and hit De Lima, who was standing on the median, the report said. De Lima was thrown backward onto the hood of Aspirany's car and ejected from the hood when Aspirany hit the fourth vehicle, the report said.

De Lima suffered extensive trauma to her body and was taken to Aventura Medical Center where she later died.

A witness said they saw Aspirany spray himself with cologne while he was still in his car, then watched as Aspirany got out of his car and walked calmly to the sidewalk, the report said.

The witness said Aspirany stood with bystanders for a few moments then started to walk away, the report said. As officers arrived, the witness pointed out Aspirany as the driver of the car, and when officers went to speak with Aspirany, he fell to the ground and said he had a chest injury, the report said.

Aspirany was taken to Aventura Medical Center, where an officer noticed he had red and bloodshot eyes, his speech seemed slurred, and he had a smell of alcohol "emanating from his person," the report said.

The report said a bottle of Jagermeister was found in Aspirany's car. When a blood sample was taken at the hospital, Aspirany had a blood alcohol level of .15, well above Florida's .08 limit, the report said.

Aspirany appeared in court Thursday, where prosecutors said he fled the country to Hungary but was convinced to return by his daughter.

An attorney for Aspirany said he returned to the country after he learned he was charged, and said Aspirany doesn't pose a flight risk.

He was ordered held on $115,000 bond and told not to drive or drink if he's released. He was also ordered to surrender his U.S. and Hungarian passports.
