Man Gets 45 Years for Running Friend Over with Car

A northeast Florida man who ran over and killed an acquaintance after a bar fight has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

A Duval County judge sentenced 34-year-old Adam Lloyd Shepard on Wednesday. A jury found him guilty last month of manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. They didn't convict on a first-degree murder charge.

Authorities say Shepard and 35-year-old Spencer Schott went to a Jacksonville Beach bar together in January 2011. They got into a fight, and Shepard got kicked out. Shepard later texted Schott that he let his dog out of his apartment. When Schott returned home, Shepard ran the other man over. The Florida Times-Union reports that Shepard fled the state but was eventually caught.

Defense attorneys say the death was an accident and that Schott started the fight.
