Man Hits Boy, Loses Control of Car Taking Him to Hospital

Man who tried to do "right thing" arrested after striking boy, crashing car on way to hospital

Good intentions led a South Florida man to jail.

Miramar police say that when 32-year-old Herbert Battle struck an 11-year-old boy with his minivan Monday, he tried to do the "right thing" by taking the child to the hospital. As they raced across town, Battle lost control of his vehicle, hit a curb and got a flat tire.

The South Florida SunSentinel reports Battle was taken into custody after police arrived and learned he was wanted for a drug-related probation violation charge.

Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues says Battle called 911 on the drive to the hospital. Paramedics took the child to the hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

Battle is being held with no bail at the Broward County Jail. He hasn't been charged in the crash.
