Man in Custody After Chase Ends in Crash in Dania Beach

A suspect who jumped into a lake in Dania Beach while trying to flee police was taken into custody Wednesday morning, officials said.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said the incident began in Oakland Park when deputies responded to a domestic dispute call and the suspect fled in a car.

There was short pursuit on Interstate 95 southbound that ended when the suspect crashed then bailed out near Stirling Road and took off on foot.

The man ran near a Courtyard Marriott near the Bass Pro Shop, where he jumped into a lake, officials said. He was taken into custody a short time later.

"The suspect was definitely reckless from the beginning," BSO spokesperson Joy Oglesby said. "We’re talking about somebody who was involved in a domestic incident who took a person against their will and then ended up crashing into multiple vehicles. A number of people were actually taken into the hospital for observation."

Authorities later identified the suspect as Harveltz Beaubrun. He was charged with resisting an officer and eluding police, as well as a probation violation for a previous manslaughter case.
