Man Killed in Hit-and-Run Crash on Bird Road: Authorities

The vehicle that the FHP was looking for was found at an elementary school

The vehicle involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash on Bird Road was found abandoned at an elementary school on Tuesday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Surveillance video captured a fleeting image of the impact of the crash before the driver took off westbound on Bird Road from Southwest 97th Avenue after the crash, which killed Carlos Jesus Pildain, 67, of Miami, and injured his wife Dixiana, who was rushed to Kendall Regional Hospital.

The car was found at Blue Lakes Elementary School in the area of 9250 SW 52nd Terrace. The crash occurred at 12:56 a.m. in the area of State Road 976 and SW 97th Ave.

"When I went up to the wife I tried to talk to the husband. She tried to smack his face to see if he was conscious, but he never really responded," said witness Manuela Herrera.

Witness German Rodriguez also described what happened after the crash.

β€œAnd all of a sudden I see everybody, and I still see the car, and I get my adrenaline, and I start going after the guy, you know?” he said. β€œI start going after the guy, and at least trying to get as close as possible.”

Rodriguez said he was not able to see the license plate.

Crews hauled off the smashed car just before 5 a.m.

"I don't know how people can, you know, live with that. How do you hit someone and just leave instead of trying to stay and call an ambulance,"  Herrera said.

Authorities ask anyone with information on the incident to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
