Police identify man shot during baby shower

Police on Monday identified a man who was fatally shot during a baby shower in North Miami.

Police said Jeffrey Leroy, 25, was shot just before 9 p.m. Sunday at the Gwen Margolis Community Center at 1590 Northeast 123rd Street, a city-owned facility.

"There was a family celebrating a baby shower at this location and during that celebration, someone shot and killed another individual," North Miami Police spokesman Major Neal Cuevas said.

A neighbor who lives near 16th Avenue and 123rd Street said she didn't hear the gunshots, but did hear the commotion that followed.

"We were standing up on the balcony and I just heard screaming and people running," said Erica Tactuk.

"People were asking for help, running and screaming and I told my daughter let's go check out what happened," said her mother Alyah Tactuk.

North Miami Police say it was unclear whether the victim or the shooters were invited guests of the celebration. They were trying to determine what the relationship was between the victim and the person or people involved.

"At this point investigators, and there are several of them on the scene, are trying to gather all of that information to see if we can get a description of the people or persons that did this and further the investigation," Cuevas said.

Some neighbors also worried about the expectant mother and her proximity to the violence.
