Man Shot and Killed on Miami Beach; Suspect Still on the Run

Shots were fired Saturday night on Miami Beach, sending many people running out of fear.

The incident happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday near Collins Avenue and 14th Street.

“It sounded like it was right behind me,” said Michael Robertson, who works on Miami Beach. “I could hear the shells hit the ground, I swear.”

“It sounded like six to ten pops. I thought it was firecrackers,” said Harry Wilson, who is visiting Miami Beach from Ohio.

Wilson was walking toward the Walgreens on 14th and Collins when he heard the gunshots.

“There was a little bit of chaos for a while. Everybody on the patio ran inside. People on the street took off,” said Wilson.

Police said the victim, a 33-year-old man who has not yet been identified, may have been involved in some sort of confrontation prior to the shooting.

Miami Beach Fire Rescue took the man to Jackson Memorial’s trauma center, where he later died.

While investigators haven’t released the identity of the victim, officials said he is well-known to officers in the area.

Blocks away from the Walgreens at Lummus Park, police roped off a portion of the park with crime scene tape. NBC 6 crews spotted at least one gun shell casing on the ground, but police wouldn’t confirm if that investigation is connected to the shooting that happened last night.

Police have indicated that the shooter is a man and are urging him to come forward with information on what led to last night’s incident.

Anyone with information about Saturday night’s shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
