A Little Havana man is in jail after a dispute with his neighbors over feeding of stray cats turned violent.
The dispute began at an apartment complex in the 2000 block of Southwest Seventh Street in Little Havana.
The victims told NBC 6 that they would leave food for stray cats in the hallways - something that 70-year-old neighbor Jose Estrada did not like.
In a heated exchange captured on cell phone video, Estrada came to the victims' door and got into a profanity-laced argument with them. The situation quickly escalated, with Estrada pulling out a gun and shooting multiple times into the apartment.
The family is seen on video running upstairs for cover, and heard telling one another to call the police. The victims ran outside and flagged down the responding officers. They also showed them the cell phone video.
The victims were not injured in the shooting.
"I didn't think he was going to use the gun," Ana Perez said. "T thought he was trying to intimidate me, I never thought it was a real gun. He never gave signs of having dementia."
According to the victims, the landlord may evict both them and Estrada.
Jail records show that Estrada was booked into jail Thursday evening. He's facing charges of attempted felony murder and was ordered held on $10,000 bond.
It's not known whether Estrada has hired an attorney.
The judge also ordered Estrada to stay away from his neighbors.
