A man was killed when he was hit by a train while fishing in Aventura Wednesday evening, police said

Aventura Police said they received a call around 6 p.m. from a conductor with the Florida East Coast Railway System who said he hit someone near 179th Street and Biscayne Boulevard.

Police said the victim, identified as 30-year-old Ian Campbell, was fishing with a friend from a train bridge on a canal that separates North Miami Beach from Aventura and the two were trying to cross the tracks when Campbell was hit.

The unidentified friend wasn't injured.

Campbell was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center where he later died. Aventura Police and the Florida East Coast Railway Police Department are investigating.
