A local philanthropist is taking thousands of steps to raise money for Miami Children's Hospital.

"Anyone can write a check," said Mike Fernandez. But he said walking 500 miles along the Way of St. James from France to Spain will drive home his message. "This is about the kids at Miami Children's Hospital whom we are all committed to helping."

Fernandez, who announced the walk at a news conference Friday, is also counting on some help from famous friends.

"We want to build a world class hospital," said Shane Battier of the Miami Heat.

His teammate Ray Allen echoed the sentiment. "I understand," he said, pointing out his own son's diabetes condition requires many hospital trips.

Stars from Jon Secada to Andy Garcia and Martin Sheen voiced their support for Fernandez's goal of more than $3 million.

Fernandez's own 19-month-old granddaughter Daniella is recovering from open-heart surgery she recently underwent at MCH.

"She was the conduit," he said, calling her his inspiration.

He expects to begin his 500-mile journey to northwestern Spain by the end of the month.
