Man Wanted in Attempted Murder of Mom's Boyfriend Turns Self In

A South Florida man wanted in the attempted murder of his mother's boyfriend turned himself into authorities Tuesday, officials said.

Adrian Rodriguez, 26, is charged with attempted murder and criminal mischief in the May 12 attack on 47-year-old Daniel Rivero, Monroe County Sheriff's officials said.

Rodriguez was ordered held on $76,500 bond and it was unknown if he has an attorney.

Authorities said Rodriguez hit Rivero twice in the head with a glass ashtray as he lay sleeping in bed at his Key Largo home. He then broke two cell phones Rivero might have used to call for help and fled the scene, authorities said.

As Rodriguez fled to Miami, he called 911 and reported that someone was bleeding from the head at the Key Largo home, authorities said.

When deputies arrived they found Rivero with a serious head injury. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later flown to Kendall Regional Medical Center with a fractured skull, a brain bleed and swelling on the brain.

Rodriguez admitted to making the 911 call but denied hitting Rivero. Authorities said there were inconsistencies between his story and the evidence at the scene.

Rivero said he believed Rodriguez hit him and left him to die over $550 rent that Rodriguez and his mother owed him, authorities said.
