Man Who Survived Broward Plane Crash Leaves Hospital

A man who survived a small plane crash with his wife in northwest Broward County last month was released from the hospital Friday after spending nearly three weeks recovering.

"I feel great, it's hard to believe how much time has gone by but it's great to be able to see what the outside of the hospital looks like," Kenneth McKenzie said.

In a flash McKenzie became a patient nearly three weeks ago when his plane dropped out of the sky in the Everglades.

"The one thing I can say is that without a doubt the airplane failed," he said.

McKenzie, 50, and his wife, Sonia, were the only two on board during the emergency. Fire rescue at the scene said both miraculously escaped and were walking around when they arrived. But Kenneth still suffered from second and third degree burns.

"These kind of moments make you pause and stop and look at your life, we had an email exchange, this needs to be a year of no regrets," he said.

Kenneth rolled out of Jackson Burn Center in a wheelchair and cast Friday. It was hard to tell where he was injured because of a unique way doctors fixed him up.

"It's fascinating the science that they use, they actually used modified pigskin as a graft and it looks well on my face, in my arm and my upper leg and now we're waiting to see what happens with the lower leg," McKenzie said.

Doctors may have given him new skin, but the accident definitely changed what's underneath it.

"We all get caught up so much and everything that we're doing every day and settling life throws you a curve ball and says okay, wake up, there's things going on that you need to pay attention to," he said.
