A man shot and killed his estranged girlfriend then turned the gun on himself in a murder-suicide on a Brickell sidewalk Wednesday night, police said.

Miami Police said they received calls of a shooting at around 9:20 p.m. near 145 Southwest 12th Avenue.

When officers arrived they found the pair dead on the sidewalk, police said.

Police identified the man as Coclea Gheorghe Cristian, 48, and Dumuta Szerika, 49. Both were Romanian citizens who lived in Pennsylvania and had been in a relationship for about two years.

According to police, Szerika and her 14-year-old son had traveled to Miami to stay with her 27-year-old daughter and to get away from Cristian.

Cristian apparently followed them from Pennsylvania in an attempt to rekindle their relationship but when Szerika refused, he shot her and then turned the gun on himself, police said.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
