Sen. Marco Rubio bashed the rollout of the Affordable Care Act Monday, warning consumers to keep a record of errors they encounter while trying to access the website.
"It is clear the ObamaCare rollout has been a disaster that has further eroded the American people's confidence in the federal government's ability to keep basic promises," Rubio said in a statement. "With all the problems and errors with the ObamaCare website, people should collect as much evidence as they can from their experiences in order to protect themselves from potential fraud, double billing, and penalties once the mandate is enforced."
Rubio's comments came shortly after President Barack Obama held a news conference at the White House to tout the benefits of Obamacare and acknowledge there have been some problems.
"Nobody's madder than me that the website isn't working as well as it should, which means it's going to get fixed," Obama said. "Everybody who wants insurance through the marketplace will get insurance, period."
Obama's remarks kick off a publicity campaign for the HealthCare.gov website, geared toward encouraging Americans to enroll using the online exchanges. They also come weeks after the rocky rollout of enrollment on them began, and soon after his administration acknowledged the snafus and said it is enlisting the "best and brightest" to fix them.
Obama defended the law and said Obamacare was more than just a website. "It's time for folks to stop rooting for its failure, because hard-working middle-class families are rooting for its success," he said.
But Rubio said the website issues could have consequences.
"While the errors with the website have been well documented in the media, it's important that every consumer who is unable to register keep a record of the specific errors they encounter on the website because of the threat of potential government fines for failing to enroll in the future," Rubio said. "Make no mistake: The IRS will go after anyone who fails to meet the Obamacare requirements, so it's important that consumers document the online problems."
