Marlins' J.T. Realmuto Selected to MLB All-Star Game, Joins Others With South Florida Connection

What to Know

  • Catcher J.T. Realmuto will be heading to Washington D.C. as the team’s lone representative to the annual MLB All-Star Game.
  • In his fifth season with the team, Realmuto is batting .317 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs – three of which came on Sunday.

Heading into the 2018 season, Miami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto reportedly was not wanting to be a member of the organization any longer after their latest offseason fire sale of top talent.

Now, Realmuto will be heading to Washington D.C. as the team’s lone representative to the annual MLB All-Star Game. The 27-year-old catcher was selected Sunday as a reserve for the July 17th game hosted by the Washington Nationals.

In his fifth season with the team, Realmuto is batting .317 with 12 home runs and 44 RBIs – three of which came on Sunday during a five hit game to pace Miami’s 10-2 victory over the Nationals, ending a four game losing streak.

Realmuto’s selection – part of a requirement that each team have at least one representative in the mid-summer classic – is the bright spot on a Marlins season that sees the team having the worst record in the National League (37-55) and the fourth worst in all of Major League Baseball.

The Marlins catcher is not the only person with South Florida ties to get selected. Former Miami Brito High School star and current Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was selected to his fourth All-Star game while former Nova Southeastern University product and current St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas was selected to his first game.

Mikolas’ teammate at NSU, current Boston Red Sox designated hitter and Flanagan High School grad J.D. Martinez, was selected to his second All-Star game.

Two other players with ties to the Sunshine State – former Florida Gulf Coast star and current Boston Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale along with former FSU star and current San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey – were also selected for the game.
